Children’s Book Review.
We’re Going On a Bear Hunt, by Michael Rosen
This book is so loved by the children in my class. I have 6 autistic boys in my class aged 6. They sing along with the story and do the sign language actions to each part of the story. It is so lovely to see. They love the story and ask for it A LOT! It is also a great way to calm them down. (So, we teachers / learning assistants love it too!).
The story is about a family going on a bear hunt! The pictures are illustrated by Helen Oxenbury . The family pictures I presume are Mum, Dad, sister, brother and baby. It doesn’t actually specify. Also the family dog goes with them.
They have to get through a number of elements until they find the bear! They go through a river, “splishspash splish splash”, ( cue the signs). They go through the long wavy grass “ swishy swashy swishy swashy”.
After going through a few of the elements they find the bear in a cave, but the bear is a little scary! So the family have to rush back to their house back through all the elements. Hence the story reverses!

The story finishes with the family back at home. As an addition to this story, I add :
“The poor bear, he just wanted to be friends!”
Now each of the boys add that bit in too.
I love this story, mainly because my pupils get so much out of it. I guess that’s the most important thing about children’s books, that they get something out of them, and if it’s educational then all the better.
The pages are repetitive in this book which is good for the children as they can easily learn the words themselves and it can be told in a sing song voice, which the children can do also.
We actually did a project based on this book, whereby the children made their own book of The Bear Hunt. It included photos of them in the grass, in the mud (– clay), in the snow etc etc. It was really very enjoyable for them and for us.
I would definitely recommend this book for any young children, and I’m sure their parents / carers / siblings would also really enjoy it too.
Thank you to AJ for having me on the blog, it is a pleasure to share my thoughts with you and your readers.

This book and gruffalo are always a hit. I used to go around with the girls at campsites singing and acting out we’re going on a bear hunt. We used to get some looks. Xx

  2. I imagine that would be very funny Tanya!!
